The Children's Department is an exciting wing of the library filled with materials for children of all ages and their families. Books, videos, magazines, books on CD and DVD's are just some of the materials you will find in the Children's Department.
Story times, programs and events are held for children ages 12 months through elementary school age, but it is never too early to introduce your baby to books! In addition to the younger ages, many middle school children continue to use the materials in the Children's Department because they appreciate the reading level, and they continue to be comfortable in the lively environment. Materials are also available for those that work with children. These professional books are part of the Parenting Collection, which is located in the last aisle of books at the back of the room.
Story times are a wonderful way to introduce children to the library and a love of books. Sessions are usually eight weeks long and are held throughout the year. Registration is required. These groups are also a good way for local parents of young children to meet each other. Toddler story times consist of books and songs as well. The story times for the older children feature children's picture books and carefully selected literature along with related crafts. For a complete schedule of story times, please call the Children's Desk at 508-295-2343 extension 14.
The Summer Reading Program begins at the end of June and follows a different theme each year to stimulate an interest in reading and related activities. There are many programs, including craft workshops, story times, magicians, puppet shows, and other exciting events in which families may participate. A full calendar for the summer is available each June and July during registration.
Children may receive library cards when they turn five years old. Stop by the desk with your child at his or her fifth birthday and join with the staff in celebrating this special event in your child's life. We are always so pleased to welcome another patron into our circle of readers!
