Yuishinkai Kobujutsu
Yuishinkai Kobujutsu
Yuishinkai Kobujutsu, an organization based in Japan, was formed to teach,
promote and preserve the martial arts as was practiced in Okinawa around
the turn of the 19th century. The Japanese term, kobujutsu, means
traditional (ko) martial (bu) art (jutsu).

Beginners are first taught Karate basics such as stances, blocks, punches,
kicks, knee strikes and elbow strikes.  Kicks are kept below belt level as
high kicks are not considered practical.  Next students move onto kata
which is a set of karate movements practiced as a routine. The katas taught
are in the same tradition as was taught in the ancient Shuri, Naha and
Tomari systems of Okinanwa. Some of these katas are hundreds of years old
and have been handed down over the centuries from teacher to student.
Students are also taught pre-arranged attacks and defenses to re-enforce
their understanding of the dynamics of karate.  Adult students train with
karate weapons such as the bo, sai, nunchaku and tonfa.   Basic bo (staff)
training is also introduced to the more advanced youth students.

In Yuishinkai Kobujutsu, competition is not practiced and is discouraged.
Competition encourages students to only train for point scoring that
emphasizes karate merely as a sport and not as a martial art.  Martial
sports promote values that are more orientated towards financial gain, hero
worshipping, image presentation and power posturing.  This is very apparent
when you look at professional sports today.  Yuishinkai Kobujutsu is taught
as a means of self-defense - it is not a game and has to be respected for
what it was designed to do.  Students are encouraged to respect each other
and their teachers; to help each other learn together; and to try their
best in training rather than be the best.  Through diligent practice,
Yuishinkai Kobujutsu promotes the development of self-confidence,
self-esteem and self-discipline.

Instructor: Colman Fink has been involved in the martial arts for over 30
years and has been teaching Taiji (Tai Chi)and Kobujutsu/Karate for at
least 25 years. He holds a 4th degree black belt in the Yuishinkai
Kobujutsu system.
