FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, June 30, 2014

The Town of Wareham is working to preserve the livability of its residential neighborhoods by instituting its new Resident Parking Permit Program, which prohibits non-residents from parking on residential streets for extended periods of time.

The Resident Parking Permit Program will take effect on Tuesday, July 1, 2014. It currently affects residents, guests, and visitors of Onset Village on newly-designated Resident Only streets.
Resident drivers who live or own taxable real estate in Onset will be required to purchase on-street parking permits that allow them to park within designated residential zones. The Resident Permit, which costs $30 per year for residents under 65-years-old and $15 per year for age 65 and older also gives residents access to trash transfer stations, as well as beach parking lots at Little Harbor Beach, Swifts Beach, and Swifts Neck. Proof of residence is required upon purchase of the permit.

Guests visiting residences in the permit zones, but staying less than 24 hours, will be required to obtain a Guest Permit. There is no charge for Guest Permits, but the permits are dated and only valid for the date marked on the permit. This will require pre-planning for the property owner or permanent resident. Up to six guest permits may be issued at one time.

Visitors who stay at a residence within the designated Resident Parking Permit zones for more than 24 hours, but not more than two weeks, will be required to purchase a Visitor Permit. This permit costs $5.00 per vehicle and does not include parking at the town’s beaches or use of the transfer stations.

A Visitor Permit is only valid for 14 consecutive days. The Visitor Permit is ideal for vacationers renting summer homes by the week or for visitors staying with friends and family for a period of less than two weeks.

Only the property owner or permanent resident of the property may purchase the Visitor Permit for his or her visitors. No more than six permits may be purchased at one time. Visitor Permits are dated and only active for a designated time period. Proof of ownership or resident status will be required at the time the Visitor Permit is issued.

Business Parking Permits for designated areas are available for owners and employees of Onset Village businesses at a cost of $10.00 per permit. Non-resident Parking Permits are available for $50 per year and give access to designated street parking areas (outside of the residential zone) and beach parking at Swifts Beach and Swifts Neck.

Permits will be issued by the Wareham Harbormaster’s Office, located in the Multi-Service Center, 48 Marion Road, adjacent to Town Hall. Complete information about the program is available at that office and online.

The Wareham Police Department will check vehicle permits from July 1 until July 15 and will alert any drivers without the proper permit of the procedure for obtaining one.

Beginning July 16, Wareham Police will begin full enforcement of the Parking Permit Program by ticketing and towing violators.

Permits expire yearly on December 31.

Please contact the Town Administrator’s Office at 508-291-3100 ext 3110 with any questions about the Resident Parking Permit Program.
