RABIES BAITING

April 24, 2018

Wareham Natural Resources. In coordination with the USDA and the Cape Cod Rabies Task Force, we will be distributing rabies vaccine baits to reduce rabies in wildlife, tomorrow April 24th.  . The baited vaccine that we will be distributing is a small, 2 inch x 2 inch dark block that says "rabies vaccine" in black lettering. The bait is a fishmeal based polymer. The bait is not harmful to pets or humans, if you find a bait please use a glove or towel to pick it up and throw it in the woods where children and pets will not find it.

The baiting will occur between the hours of 7:00am and 4:00pm on various roads throughout the Town on April 24th. Vehicles will be driving on the side of the road, with hazards flashing and will be a marked Wareham Natural Resources unit, or will have a white magnet that says "rabies control team". Please slow down when approaching and passing the vehicles.

We would also like to take this time to remind residents that rabies is present in wildlife in all areas of Massachusetts. Do not handle wildlife. If you should come into contact with wildlife, report it to Wareham Natural Resources Animal Control Division. To learn more, please visit http://www.wareham.ma.us/natural-resources
