Announcements

The Council on Aging offers several programs to the community. In addition to the five day a week meals on wheels program, the COA also offers twice weekly pick-up lunches.  To reserve a Tuesday or Thursday lunch call 508-291-3130 the week prior to reserve your meal.

AARP tax preparation help is available on Fridays, starting in March.  You must call to reserve an appointment, being held at the Wareham Multi service center.  Masks and social distancing are required.

The Gleason Family YMCA is holding a food distribution event February 12, starting at 11 a.m. until the food is gone.  You simply drive into the parking lot, and the trunk of your car is loaded with the free food by volunteers.  Because this is a very popular program the Y suggests you plan to get there early.  Location is the Y at 33 Charge Pond Road.

The Y has also instituted a new food distribution program.  This program started January 29, and is available Tuesdays and Thursday.  Fresh prepared food will be distributed from 3:30 to 5:30 or until the food is gone.  The program is open to children 18 and under.  On Tuesday the recipient will get 3 meals, and on Friday 4 meals.  These meals are meant to supplement the meals being distributed to children by the Wareham Public Schools.

The Church of the Good Shepherd, High Street, has Food pantry the first Tuesday of every month. From 3-5.  Thursday evening meals are available from 3:30 to 4:30.

The Onset Foursquare Church has a soup kitchen every Tuesday from 4:30 to 6:00.   Please pull up to the ramp to receive your meal.

Other food programs have been mentioned in our announcements many times, and are now posted on the Town’s website.  If you have a friend or relative who does not have a computer please print the information out for him or her.

The community of Wareham is a very caring and generous community, and these programs will help those with food insecurity.

A reminder that dog licenses are available at the town clerk’s office.  Most residents have received information about licensing their dog.  You may complete the registration by mail, by providing a SAS, a copy of the current rabies certificate, as well as the fee per dog.  Spayed dogs are $10, and non-spayed dogs are $13 through March 31st, and thereafter there are penalties for late filing.  If you are age 70 or older you may register one dog for free.  Any other dogs are the usual price.

And one more very important announcement.  This is particularly for senior citizens who are targeted for these scams.

If you get a phone call from the IRS please hang up.  It is a scam.

If you get a phone call from your bank asking you if you made a purchase of such and such on your credit card please hang up.  Then call your bank and ask if there is a problem or a disputed charge.

If you get a call saying you are going to be arrested if you don’t pay….please hang up.  It is a scam.

If you get an email from someone you do know asking you to send them gift cards so they can pay the hospital bill, or buy groceries…..please do not respond.  It is a scam.

Unfortunately these types of scams are all too common, and people are victimized by them. Please, if in doubt HANG UP.  If in doubt please do not respond in any way.

Updated information for the Covid -19 vaccination:

Southcoast Health has an online portal for any patient who uses Mychart, available through Southcoast.  Shots are being provided to those who are eligible, meaning the 75 and older age group.  The Gleason Family YMCA is the location for these shots.

For those who do not have Mychart, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has a website where eligible individuals can register to receive the shot either at Gillette Stadium or Fenway Park.  To schedule an appointment at one of these two locations, go to Mass.Gov and follow the instructions.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has also provided a hotline for Covid information.  Dial 211 between the hours of 8:30 to 5 Monday through Friday.  There are several hundred operators staffing that line, and there are almost 100 language translators available.  For those who do not have computer access this may be the easiest way to get information, as well as register for the shot.

The Wareham Helping Wareham Facebook page has posted feeding families and anyone in need on February 15th.  There is a link for anyone who would like to help raise funding.
